After weeks of layer after glorious layer of acrylics, charcoals, inks, and assorted chemicals, I’m happy to present my latest canvas (and the first canvas piece I’ve completed since my return to Los Angeles)! Over the last few weeks, I’ve found myself literally obsessed with this piece…every little nuance has just been an exploration in balance, technique, and layering. When all was said and done, I figured there were at least 35 layers of paint and chemicals, thoroughly saturating the canvas within an inch of it’s life.
Although a little on the smaller size, measuring in at a nice 18 x 18″, I really wanted to approach this mentally as if it were large-scale…and I think it shows in the final result: a highly detailed, thoughtful, emotional work.
Equally important to me is that the painting signifies a new era in my catalogue — maintaining the more raw characteristics in my body of work up until now, yet reaching deeper…further…into how I want the technique and imagery on all future work to be just as emotive as the text that defines it. I felt the jump inside me as I completed my last painting in Dallas, “A Ballet of Friction”, as well as the pieces on paper I’ve finished over the last month. But, this new painting completely encapsulates me…who I am…and my work…
I hope that you see in this new painting all the things I’ve described above…and so, without further adieu:
